In the X-31 simulator, the pilot sat in an open cockpit and watched projected images of the ground. In the photo, the viewer sees an external image of the X-31 in flight. (Earlier simulators used a television monitor for the external visuals.) On either side of the cockpit are panels which are in different positions then their counterparts in the real aircraft. The X-31 was designed to test the ability of an aircraft to fly and dogfight at angles of attack far beyond anything a conventional aircraft could achieve.
